Hand Made Brain Tanned Deerskin Leather Pouch. Hand stitched deerskin clutch/ pouch. 7 1/2” x 5 1/4” with a detachable wrist strap. Genuine antler tip closer. Pouch is made from whitetail deerskin that I tan myself using a method employed by Native Americans. This method uses wood ashes, animals brains, and smoke to produce a beautiful and totally natural leather. There are no chemicals involved, and this is not “ commercial brain tanned” leather. I gather the hides from hunters here in Western Kentucky, and the whole process takes place in my backyard and on my craft bench. Skins will have “imperfections”, marks the deer got from barbed wire, fights, and hunters. I think they add character and uniqueness. Brain tanned deerskin is very strong yet soft and supple.
