We hunt fields, creeks and cliffs, on and near camp sites and mounds, in particular those artifacts that we list for sale are mostly from the South Western region of The State of Kentucky. Hunted With permission from the land owner and found on the surface.
Most are late archaic to woodland period, which is approximately 8000 BC to 1000 AD. These included many different sizes shapes and styles of stones, animal stones, spirit stones, healing stones, boundary stones, counter weights, shaman stones, ceremonial stones, war clubs, ornaments, net weights, etc. They are round, semi round, cone disc, teardrop, oval, elongated, cone, cupped disc, disc, (natural state) disc, animal likeness, doll shaped. They had many and various uses. Such as games, ceremonial, ritual healing, spiritual, markers, and children’s play.
Some stones were round, drilled or shaped by hand. Others stones used were naturally occurring stones found in the near by creeks and cliffs. The indigenous peoples, children and adults of the area searched for and used stones that needed little work or manipulation.
Games included throwing a spear or shooting an arrow to hit a stone as it was rolled across the ground, making a circle and rolling the stone into it from various distances, rolling it into a hole and rolling it while another individual rolled his to try to hit it from the side. Using a sling to hit another stone of larger size. Throwing stones at various targets.
Animal and doll shapes were painted with pigments made from plants and minerals. Some were dressed with sewn leather for arms and legs and furr for animals etc.
