one vintage FISHER 12" woofer—ST-500 and other speakers c.1972—new foam surround

Offered for your consideration is one (1) vintage
FISHER
12 inch woofer
removed from my FISHER ST-500 three-way speakers.  As per the date code stamped on the magnet’s edge, this woofer was manufactured on August 18, 1972.
As you may know, FISHER purchased their drivers from two main sources back then, Gefco (EIA source code 1056, always stamped in red) and United Speaker Systems (USS) of New Jersey which was not an EIA member.  This woofer was manufactured for FISHER by USS, a family company still in operation today making Phase Tech speakers.

This FISHER 12” woofer is in clean, very good condition. It has a sturdy textured paper cone that is structurally sound with no holes or cracks and the large textile voice coil dustcap has never been harmed.  Plus, the black-enameled steel basket has no dents or scratches, just a hint of surface rust in spots.  Most importantly,
the aged original polyurethane foam suspension was just replaced with a quality polyether surround that has the correct “flat-attach” profile
.
The main drawback to most U.S. and foreign-made speakers from the early 1970’s to mid 1990’s was the use of foam for the woofer surrounds. Though foam offers excellent cone excursion, it invariably rots and/or disintegrates in 12-20 years no matter what climate you live in. This woofer was no exception—the surround had fallen apart years ago.
Some of you have replaced woofer surrounds before, so you know that it’s a time-consuming process that takes a great deal of patience and a steady hand. This woofer had no flange gasket, so I first cleaned the cone edges/basket flange carefully to remove the old gummy foam and stubborn factory adhesives, which took some time to do thoroughly, then glued the inner surround to the cone.  It should be noted that the original factory surround installation leaked some glue on the woofer’s edge, leaving several unavoidable marks on the cone when I removed it, as pictured.  Next, I glued the outer surround to the basket flange after careful centering to ensure no voice coil rub.  Overnight drying of the glue was allowed for each step of the process to achieve the clean and perfect results you see here.  Now this woofer is in great shape once again—perhaps even better than new with the improved polyether foam surround of today.
Most importantly, this woofer has been fully tested after the new surround was installed and sounds terrific—very strong and clear with detailed lower midrange and solid low-end response.  I also tested its DC resistance at 6.1Ω, consistent with a nominal 8 ohm driver rating.  And the basket flange measures 12” diameter, it stands 5” tall, and the eight mounting holes are each spaced 4⅜” apart, c-t-c.
