Small handsewn medicine bag of soft native tanned deerhide. This has hairpipe bone beads with vintage brass beads and very old antique white heart red beads. There are 2 cowrie shells as well.   There are tin cones on some of the fringe.  This bag was made by Brian Brodie, partner of a niece of well known Passamaquoddy basketmaker, Clara Keezer (d/2016).  Brian became interested in leather and beadwork, did lots of research with tribal elders and from books and has combined some of what he learned in this small medicine bag.
The bag is of the softest deerhide, the small front flap has 2 dangles of beads.. see above.
The strap is made of twisted deerhide (same hide as rest of bag).... Twisted leather and rawhide was a technique used by many tribes for straps, etc.  The strap is short, meant to tie onto your belt or perhaps used with a neck strap.
Bag is 3" long and trapezoidal shape ... bottom is 3" across, the top, 2".  With the short flap opened,  flap to bottom of bag is 4.25" long. The 2 bead/cowrie shell dangles are 3" long... leather fringes (& tin cones) are also 3" long and make a great jingling sound.
There are not that many Wabanaki beadworkers or leather workers.  Brian Brodie is interested in keeping the tradition alive and is living among the Passamaquoddy in the most Northeastern part of the USA - Sipayik Maine...
